13 Types of Landscape Space: New York Botanical Garden Seminar with Duncan Brine

February 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

A New New York Botanical Garden seminar:
Site Character:
An Approach to Creative Design

Preparing for this seminar, I differentiated between 13 types of landscape space. Please comment with your space ideas.

1. The region: the greater landscape at large

2. The site: the entire property, within boundaries

3. Separate areas: within the property boundaries

4. The space between separate areas

5. The distance (the interval of space) between the garden-goer and a plant or planting

6. The distance, from below or above, between the garden-goer and a plant or planting (or another garden element)

7. The intervals of space between plants and other elements of an area

8. The landscape artist’s imagined space

9. The garden-goers imagined space: The response to the experience of landscape may trigger the recollection of another landscape or it may inspire garden-goers to imagine their own landscapes.

10. Garden Space

11. Naturalistic Space (nature shaped by a designer)

12.13. A deciduous woodland, with and without leaves

Seminar description: Discover a contextual approach to shaping landscape and garden space. Learn to base decisions on the characteristics of the site, not conventional style or structure. Topics include connecting spaces, the relationship between background and foreground, transparency, and framing views. Images of the instructor’s work illustrate his approach. If you have wide-angle shots of your own projects, please bring them for discussion.
Instructor: Duncan Brine

is landscape architecture’s space the same as architecture’s form? Or does LA have both space and form?
